Speed Calculator Online

Speed Calculator is online 3 in 1 tool. You can easily calculate average speed having time and distance (given in different units of lenght e.g. miles, yards, meters, kilometers, inches etc.) but you can also compute traveled distance having time and average speed (given in different units of speed mph, kmh, mps yds per second etc.) and you can get travel time having average speed and distance. See, how fast end easy you can calculate speed having distance and time, how to find distance having time and speed and how to find time having speed and distance.

Time Format
This calculator uses HH:MM:SS.MS time format, where: HH stands for hours, MM for minutes, SS for seconds and MS stands for milliseconds.
Examples:
  • 11:32:30.45 - 11 hours, 32 minutes, 30 seconds, 450 milliseconds
  • 72.5:11 - 72 and half hours + 11 minutes = 72 hours and 41 minutes
  • :11:7 - 11 minutes and 7 seconds
  • :90 - 90 minutes (one hour and 30 minutes)
  • ::90 - 90 seconds (one minute and 30 seconds)
  • ::28 - 28 seconds
Calculation Examples
Average Speed Calculation - suppose we want to calculate Usain Bolt average speed during his world record winning 100 m sprint race in Berlin August 16, 2009 (this is default calculation displayed when you enter the page). What do we know?
  1. We want to calculate Bolt's average speed
  2. The distance was, of course, 100 meters
  3. Bolt ran the distance in 9.58 seconds.
So, we have to (1) check the radio button 'Compute Speed', (2) input 100 as a value of distance and set units of the distance to meters. (3) input 9.58 seconds into Time input box (be careful of time notation, to set seconds you have to type ::9.58 or 0:0:9.58, 9.58 with no colons ':' means 9.58 hours, with one preceding colon means 9.58 minutes).
Calculator answers in input box labeled 'speed'. Note, that you can choose desired unit of speed and, for example, if you set units to yards per second, you get the answer: Bolt ran 11.42 yards per second during the race. Setting meters per second, you get 10.44 mps; miles per hour - 23.35 mph; kilometers per hour - 37.58 kmh; etc.

Travel Time Calculation - Suppose, you drove 21 miles with average speed 45 miles per hour. How long did you drive? To solve this problem, simply:
  1. Check radio button 'Calculate Time'.
  2. Type 21 into input box labeled 'Distance' and set distance unit to miles
  3. Type 45 into input box labeled 'Speed' and set speed units to miles per hour
The calculator displays the answer in input box labeled 'Time' as 00:28:00 which means you traveled 28 minutes.

Distance Calculation - Let's calculate, how many miles you can travel, driving 2 hours and 30 minutes with the average speed 55 miles per hour? To answer the question, you should:
  1. Check the 'Calculate Distance' radio box and set units to miles
  2. Type 2:30:00 into 'Time' input box
  3. Type 55 into 'Speed' box and set units to miles per hour
As you can see, the answer is 137.5 miles or 221.28 kilometers or 119.48 nautical miles etc.
Time/Distance/Speed Calculation Formulas
Assume, V - stands for average speed (velocity), T - stands for traveling time and D - stands for traveled distance.

Average Speed can be calculated by using the formula: V = D/T
Traveled distance can be calculated as: D = V*T
Traveling time can be calculated using: T = D/V

Using the formulas remember about the units. For example, if the distance is given in meters and the time is given in seconds, calculated average speed is given in meters per second. To convert it to other units of measurement, you can use our speed converter. If the distance is given in yards and speed is given in miles per hour, to get time in hours, you HAVE TO convert yards to miles or miles per hour to yards per hour first.
